This half day Auckland tour is designed to give you an overview of Auckland's West Coast beaches, rainforests and lifestyles. It is similar to the full day tour without so many walks. Only 45 minutes from the City lies a different world, forged from its violent volcanic beginnings and battered by years of unrelenting pounding by the Pacific Ocean and prevailing South Westerly winds. The West Coast beaches are both beautiful, yet wild and fringed with the lush Waitakere rainforest, this really is a tour of contrasts and interesting facts suitable for all ages. The walks are all relatively short and easy, with lots of opportunity to photograph or just enjoy some stunning scenery. As the tour starts at 11.30am it is ideal for people with busy mornings or as a last minute decision.
Perched high on the Waitakere ridgeline the centre offers commanding views of both coasts of NZ. There are some amazing Maori carvings and information on the wildlife and fauna of the ranges plus many displays on the pioneering days of the Kauri logging industry. It offers some fascinating insights into the area and will leave you with a new respect for the early settlers and their harsh life.
Karekare has a character all of its own, wild and brooding one day, happy and playful the next. Once you walk through the Pohutakawa glade and sand dunes to the beach you'll feel like you are the only one there, the beach is massive and is a favourite of locals and international film makers alike. Films such as Jane Campion's "The Piano" were shot at this location. Also at Karekare has a beautiful waterfall only a few minutes from the carpark.
Next we head over the hill to famous Piha Beach with the iconic Lion Rock. From the viewpoint we get some classic shots overlooking the beach with Lion Rock standing like a sentinel guarding the coast. A mecca for surfers from all over the world and we are bound to see some while we are there. There is time to stroll on the beach and experience the black iron sand before heading to the Piha Cafe for some nourishing wholesome food.
Continuing on along the Waitakere ridgeline we stop to see a huge Kauri tree over one thousand years old. To see these giants up close and only a few minutes' walk away is awe inspiring.
